Duo for Flute and Viola
Duration: 9’ 30”
Performance Recording Coming Soon (Premiere on April 18th, 2026!)
Program Notes: One of Oregon's many "tall tales," The Bandage Man is the story of an unfortunate logger who, after dying in a tragic sawmill accident, haunts the isolated and winding Highway 101 along the dramatic cliffs and misty forests of the northern Oregon coast. They say his ghostly, mummified form sneaks up on unsuspecting teen couples, attacking during the most romantic sunset hour like a deranged serial killer. Akin to the legend of Bigfoot, few can claim personal experience, but the legend continues to this day.
Performance Notes: This piece includes many extended techniques for both instruments. For the flute, these include quarter-tone fingerings, multiphonics, embouchure and tuning adjustments, flutter-tonguing, key-clicks, tongue-ram, and vocalizing while playing. For the viola, these include retuning the C string down 150 cents to a B quarter-flat, quarter-tone fingerings, rarely used artificial harmonics (minor 3rd), overpressure/scratch tone, and optional subharmonics.
